About the Job
Description The City Clerks Office is seeking an innovative professional to provide support to the Mayor by assisting with special projects, community forums, preparing background information for meetings and public appearances, and researching and composing speeches and correspondence.
This is an unclassified position serving at the will of the City Clerk. City of Norfolk residency is required within six (6) months of employment. Essential Functions The department hiring range for this position is $68,086.90 - $85,000.00
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
    Provides high level confidential and comprehensive support to the Mayor.
    Conducts research, gathers information and data; analyzes and organizes information.
    Composes and produces documents of a complex nature including memorandums, correspondence, briefing papers, speeches and remarks.
    Communicates with citizens and responds to inquiries.
    Assists with various special projects and community forums; ensures timely and effective management of projects.
    Prepares background information for meetings and public appearances; accompanies and/or represents the Mayor at various meetings.
    Serves as a liaison to the City administration and regional, state and federal agencies.
    Maintains knowledge of current issues and understands the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
The preferred candidate will possess:

  • Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • The abillity to establish and maintain effective professional relationships.
  • Experience interacting with officials at the federal, state, or local government level or executive management level.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform high level and complex administrative support activities.
