Justice at Stake (JAS) seeks experienced Policy Counsel and Research Analyst. Working under the direction of the Director of State Affairs, this individual will play a critical role in a national effort to shed light on the problematic political role of money in judicial elections. Every 2-year election cycle, JAS and our partners release “The New Politics of Judicial Elections (NPJE),” a report analyzing the prominent role of special interest money in state Supreme Court elections.NPJE is a centerpiece for public education in favor of judicial reforms. The Policy Counsel/Research Analyst will play a key role in researching and supporting the writing and rollout of NPJE. S/he will offer a research-based approach to advocacy in the states and will work to advance key reforms and defend policies central to our mission. S/he will perform critical legal research and analysis, manage our law clerk program, and represent JAS on the Fair Courts Litigation Task Force.

Essential Job Functions:

Provide JAS the tools necessary to respond to the increasing real-time availability ofcampaign spending information during election cycles. Track disclosures as they come in, research filing deadlines and candidates, andfollow the money chains behind campaign spending, shedding light on sources of dark money where possible. Develop andanalyze polling data that will help shape the messaging we use to advocatefor policies and practices that reduce the influence of money and politics on the courts. Help our statepartners make data-driven decisions and cut through the clutter tounderstand motivate people to take action on behalf of the courts. Work closelywith our national and state based partner organizations to build andassist coalitions and campaigns supporting reforms involving judicialrecusal, judicial merit selection, public financing of judicial elections,and other reforms that strengthen the ability of the courts to ruleimpartially and protect our rights. Conduct legal research and analysis related to JAS’ mission. Draft briefing memos, fact sheets, letters, legislative summaries, law review articles, blog entries,and policy papers in support of Justice at Stake’s state affairs program. Develop,update, and maintain a knowledge base of current legal and social scienceliterature regarding fair and impartial courts. Hire andsupervise law clerks and, as appropriate, graduate fellows or interns, tosupport the above projects. Staff the Fair Courts Litigation TaskForce, which comprises a number of groups working to ensure a fair and impartial judiciary and tracks litigation impacting fair courts,including possibly working on amicus briefs.

Additional Duties:

Provide regular briefings to JAS staff and partners.

Serve as spokesperson for Justice at Stake at meetingsand public events as needed.

Requirements

J.D. and Bar membership required;1-2 years ofexperience practicinglawas a licensedattorneyor clerking for a judge preferred. Background in legal research and/or data analysis. Experience with campaign finance research, polling, and programevaluation. Experience with political and/or issue advocacy campaigns stronglypreferred. Knowledge of nonprofit 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) issues a plus. Superb editing and proofreading skills. Excellent presentation skills and ability to interact professionallywith diverse audiences. Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines with carefulattention to detail. Experience with legal research tools. Position located in Washington, D.C. Travel required, up to 20-25% of time. Flexibility in working occasional late hours/weekends for events anddeadlines. Competitive salary based on experience, excellent benefits.
