POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council on a contractual basis with the terms of employment outlined in the contract the Code and the Charter. The City Attorney is responsible to and serves at the pleasure of Council as the chief legal advisor to the City Council, City Manager, City Staff and the City’s Boards and Commissions.

The full salary range for this position is stated above. Starting wages are negotiable and dependent on the qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. tries cases before the County, State, and/or Federal courts Prepares legal opinions of routine to complex nature for City Council, City Manager, departments, and various City Boards and Commissions Attends City Council meetings and various other meetings to advise on legal problems and questions Directs the preparation and maintenance of necessary records and reports Provides regular status reports to City Council on all litigation matters and other important legal matters Apprises appropriate City officials and employees of new legal developments affecting City operations Acts as a legal advisor to, and be attorney and counsel for, the Council and shall be responsible solely to the City Council Advises any officer or department head of the City in matters relating to his/her official duties when so requested Maintains a copy of all written opinions given by the City Attorney or Staff Prosecutes ordinance violations and conducts for the City cases in court and before other legally constituted tribunals, and timely provides the City Clerk copies of such records and files relating thereto as the City Council may direct Prepares or reviews all City ordinances, contracts, bonds and other written instruments and promptly gives his/her opinion as to the legal consequences thereof Calls to the attention of City Council and potentially affected staff all matters of law, and changes or developments therein, affecting the City Performs such other duties as may be prescribed for him/her by the Charter or by the Council When consistent with the provisions of the Charter and the direction of City Council, the City Attorney shall cooperate with the City Manager; effect the policies and objectives established by the City Manager and give priority to requests made by the City Manager Speaks before various civic, professional, and legislative groups Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City Council’s discretion POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications Required : Graduation from a nationally accredited school of law and licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado Extensive experience as a practicing attorney Preferred : Extensive municipal law experience as a practicing attorney highly desirable Extensive knowledge of Colorado Law Thorough understanding of the provisions of Home Rule Physical Requirements Work is sedentary in nature and requires sufficient physical stamina and strength for: Constant sitting to perform daily tasks; occasional walking through a multilevel facility to retrieve information; frequent standing, sometimes for extended periods Frequent squatting, reaching above shoulder, and twisting to file documents and lift supplies and material; occasional bending, kneeling, climbing, balancing, and reaching below shoulder to store documents, material, and supplies Constant light grasp, fine manipulation, and handling to perform daily duties; occasional firm grasp to safely use equipment This is a safety-sensitive position and subject to City safety-sensitive requirements WORKING CONDITIONS Work is constantly performed indoors.This is primarily sedentary office work.Must demonstrate the ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including the ability to retrieve information from various locations in the office when needed.Exposure to periods of high activity, extended work hours and stress under demanding conditions.The position requires a great deal of communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies.
